Block 2 – Hearts Around

Here is block two of the All My Heart Quilt Along; if you missed the previous block, here is a quick link – block 1.  For more information on the QA see the main page under the Quilt Along tab.

Step 1: Cutting Instructions

• From each color (dark, light, 2-mediums):
  – 1 square 3 1/8″
  – 1 rectangle 5″ x 1 5/8″
  – 2 rectangles  2 3/4″ x 1 5/8″
• White
  –4 squares 3 1/8″
  – 16 squares  1 5/8″

 Step 2: Make Half Square Triangles

Match each white 3 1/8″ block to a colored block of the same size; right sides together.  Make them into HST just like block one.  Reminder – I use the drawn method.

Step 3: Make the point of the Hearts

After making your HSTs, you should have two of each color.

Piece them together by matching the colored sides together.  Looks like a flying geese block when finished.  I pressed my seams open on this part.

Step 4: Make the tops of the hearts

These are made with two flying geese blocks pieced together.  See yesterday’s post for a tutorial on how to make the flying geese.

Step 5: Piece together the Hearts

Sew the hearts together as shown; make on of each color.  I pressed my seams open on this part to reduce the bulk.

Step 6: Finish the block as shown

I pressed my seams open for a flatter block and to reduce bulk.
