Latest Shopping Goodies
During a lunch break at work this week I took the chance to stop by the quilt shop closest to the office. Here are my latest aquisitions:
I was running low on piecing thread so I took Almosaquilter’s advice and picked up some Aurifil thread to try out. Funny thing – the shop only got it in recently and didn’t know much about it. The spool is not marked with too much detail, but it is 50/2 weight; not sure of the yardage – but that one spool was close to $10.
I am also going to try basting spray (I feel a podcast coming on). I loved Sandy’s idea, from Quilting….for the rest of us, of keeping 12″ squares ready and at hand to practice machine quilting.
I couldn’t leave with just those two things, so I looked at my shopping list for upcoming projects. I got the small yo-yo maker I was missing for Morgan’t Yo-Yo cat and I found a jungle print panel for my sister’s quillow.
Good news!!! I finished piecing my Gator quilt. Pictures to come soon. I need help deciding of the inner border.

I am glad to see you bought some Aurifil thread. I can’t wait to hear how you like it! I love it and am saving up for the Aurifil Suitcase!
Bought some Aurifil, but haven’t tried yet. Why did you get it?
Also I like border combination #3
Border #5 is my first choice, #2 is my 2nd. Not wild about the orange or white against the block for some reason.
That’s a great pattern, if only it were in garnet and gold! Go ‘Noles!
;o)
Looks like 1422 yards is the standard length for the Aurifil threads. Should last a while. Don’t know the comparison size for the Robinson Anton, but maybe you can figure that part out.
Hey there! you’ll love the aurifil thread. I like it a lot but have become really partial to Masterpiece by Alex Anderson (from Superior threads) and Bottom Line (libby lehman, also superior threads) on the bottom for piecing. They are super fine and really low lint….makes for really nice seams
As for the basting, I use the 505 spray also and love it! I haven’t pin basted since I discovered it
Congrats on Morgan’s scores…that’s awesome!
You will love the Aurifil thread. It truly is worth the money and will last so long. I love to piece with gray, black and off white. It’s not dirty like other threads. Meaning you won’t get as much “stuff” on the inside of your machine when piecing. At least that’s been my experience.
I’m a BIG HUGE FAN of Aurifil. I use it for piecing–recently ponied up for a collection of four neutral colored spools from Keepsake Quilting catalogue (I think that’s where I got it anyway). Love it love it love it. It’s strong but thin, and doesn’t lint up all over the place like a lot of others do. My absolute fave.
The basting spray, however, not so much a fan. I prefer 505. That being said, I “inherited” the spray you’ve got pictured here from my Mom’s quilt studio after she’d passed away so I have no idea how old the can is. Maybe it loses its oomph after awhile or something. But I used that on a quilt and it had already unbasted itself by the time I walked it to the sewing machine. 505 sticks more securely. So hopefully you’ll have better luck. I’ll be interested to hear your experience with it! Looking forward to the podcast…
