Listen to the podcast of this post

Today we talked about my visit to the Florida Museum of Natural History and the Quilting Natural Florida exhibit.

Check out this great picture that Vanessa sent us.  Vanessa had 8 dresden plate blocks completed and had to come up with a way to put them all together.  Don’t you LOVE what she came up with!

The border in the quilt Split Oak at the Land Bridge Trail Head by Nancy “Kay” Smith was constructed using Seminole style piecing. Those Seminole women were very inventive in the techniques that they developed and we should be looking to them for inspiration for use in piecing borders, sashing, etc.

    Hi Brye (and all),
Just saw that you posted a new podcast and I can’t wait to listen to it! I am on the last podcast I had of yours in my ‘catch-up folder’, so now I want to see a podcast every week! ;-) Just kidding!

Thanks, so much for posting all of these photos. What great eye candy!

Thanks Sarah for the lovely comment. I just love dresdens and it was made a lot easier and quicker by buying the 1930’s dresdens pre-cut from Keepsake Quilting it really got me a head start to the quilt top. Loved every minute and want to make another, but got plenty other things I think I will do first, I don’t want to do all the same, give myself some variety. Vanessa

I haven’t listened to your podcast yet but couldn’t wait to see your pictures. Because of you I went to this show. I live in NE Louisiana but have a son and family in Bradenton so I decided to plan a trip with a stop in Gainesville. I spent most of the day there, looking at quilts and taking pictures and then went to the Butterfly Rainforest (I bird and observe butterflies in the wild). These exhibits were tailor-made for me!@!

I photographed about 1/2 the quilts. Interesting that we both were impressed with the reflections of the Roseate Spoonbills in the water and with Seminole quilting and the split oak and the unusual border.

thank you for mentioning this show. I’m probably the only one to go because of your information but I enjoyed it so much!

Thanks for the plug, Brye! :-)

Vanessa, your dresden plate is beautiful! I need to get my act together and make one too. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Brye, missed your podcasts, but so worth the eye candy you have given us today. Thanks for sharing my quilt. I loved making it, now just to find the time to quilt it. The Wildflowers of Florida quilt was magnificent, so many different techniques and a different way to have it all together, just beautiful. So many talented quilters out in our world isn’t there. I enjoyed your episode about the Quilting Natural Florida exhibit. I made and quilted the green and yellow Seminole pieced quilt you featured in it. I have never considered myself much of a machine quilter, so your comment about the quilting was appreciated. Maybe I’m better than I think!!
