One Sock Down – One to Go!!!

002I finsihed my first sock – Yeah!!!!

It really wasn’t that hard.  If you have been thinking about trying it – I say go for it.  I was listening to a Knit Picks podcast that encouraged me to try it.  The speaker was talking about new knitters and the projects we choose.  Scarfs can be the most boring things to knit, she implied.  So she encouraged people to jump into socks or hats.

So, that is what I did.  Yes, I had a bunch of stumbles along the way; but, WOW!  It was so much fun.  You can’t really see it, but there are a few holes here and there where I dropped stitches or mixed up the purl and knit in the pattern.  But who cares?!  I did it.

I can’t wait to finish the next one.  I don’t know what I will knit next, but I feel like I could tackle anything.  Maybe even a sweater.  Heck, if I start now, I may have it finished by next winter.

What do your think I should conquer next? Gloves, hat, Sweater, Shawl,……..

Go, Kathy! You can do it! Sweaters must be harder than socks; go for it.

They are awesome! I have this yarn and DPN’s (sz. 2) for a year building up the courage to try! I’m still on shawls – although have done several sweaters! Looking for encouragement….

Very cool. I recently started listening to Knitpicks Podcast too, and, also because of Kelly Petkun’s urging, am in the middle of knitting my first pair of socks as well. I haven’t gotten as far as Brye Lynn. (I’m up to the gusset decrease now.) So fun and very easy if I take it step by step and consult the great Lion Brand dpn tutorial whenever I get confused.

Hats are also fun. But if you want to do a sweater, Kelly suggests a toddler size to learn sweater construction and see your progress. I am totally up for Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Baby Surprise Jacket next.

SIGH! Santa gave me a ball of wool and DPNs and an “easy” sock pattern for Christmas. I just don’t have the courage to begin! You did such a fantastic job, maybe that will encourage me…

  • Whooo hooo! I’ve been listening to several knitting podcasts lately, and I am also being challenged to lay off the rectangular knits! You’ve inspired me! The worse that could happen is that I learn a little, right?

Way to go Brye Lynn….Socks are fun to knit. And if you start running into Second Sock Syndrome, you can start knitting two socks on either one very long circular needle or on two regular length circulars to make sure you still have a challenge!

By the way, thanks for listing my blog!

    Hi Brye,

Great job on the sock! I am really getting into knitting as well. I need to post on some of my projects. I gave scarves for Christmas and I am know working on my first hat. I love the portability of knitting and I find it very relaxing. I really recommend the book “Stitch n Bitch”. Funny and a great guide book.. Enjoyed the podcast Sunday. You don’t even have to have a topic. A chat is nice!
