Episode 35 ~ Bit of This, Bit of That

Listen to the podcast of this post

No topic this week, just a bunch of crafting tidbits I picked up this week.

Tiffany not only shared her paper pieced quilt with us but a site to get gourmet coffee. Check out Quilter’s Coffee.

On the podcast, I said that Tiffany did not say the pattern but I was wrong.  It was from Nancy Mahony’s book “Quilt Block Bonanza”.

Didn’t she do an awesome job.  I love the colors and the perfect points.  This is a great pattern for paper piecing.  I think it is so perfect, it almost looks like an illistration.

Jaye told us about a book (wrong again, she didn’t write it, she has it – sorry, maybe I should write the post before record.  lol).  The book is “Point Well Taken: The Guide to Success with needles and Threads”.

This is Mary’s alternative to a thread stand; it works great and will do until I invest in a thread stand.  Mary’s idea is to put the thread in a cup and hand a hanger above and behind the machine.  Thread throught the hanger before the machine and it works great.  I didn’t have a place to hang a hanger, so I stuck it in a vase and threaded it throught the hook on the hanger.

Here are the three different widths of the threads.  My Coats n’ Clark, the sewing machine guys Robinson-Anton and Mettler’s. Make sure your thread fits in your machine and pulls out smoothly; if not use a thread stand or change to a smaller spool of thread.

Fabric and thread I purchased for my United States block.

“Toys” I bought at the Quilt Shop.  I am going to play with the Shiva sticks this week.  Maybe I will podcast next week about it.

New iPod Application Fabric Journal.

Quilting Natural Florida II exhibit will be opening at the Florida Museum of Natural History from Feb. 6th to April 25.

Donate to the site.  If everyone donated $2 a year that would give me over $1,200 to spend on giveaways!  There are two quilt shows coming up and I would love to buy things to give away.

I love Tiffany’s quilt. It really does look like an illustration.
If you are still on your “de-caff” diet try Twinings decaffinated Lady Grey and Earl Grey teas. They are specialist teas but I can’t tell you how much they will cost in the U.S. Here is Scotland they are not particularly expensive adn worth it for those times when you need to spoil yourself.

I keep forgetting to comment on this podcast! I have a Janome 6500 and I use Coats and Clark all the time! I love the larger sized cones – especially if I can buy them on sale at Joann’s! I’ve used Robinson Anton and Mettler and Gutterman and Sulky and I keep going back to my C&C. The only difference is that my machine has the thread spools vertically and I believe yours is horizontal – that makes the difference! You should be fine using the cup/hanger plan – don’t listen to the repair guy!!!!

Loved the show, fantastic as usual! I have enjoyed your podcasts and learned a lot. If you go to carol doak’s website today you can link to a free Quilt Show episode where Carol demos how she does paper piecing, very cool. Nice job Tiffany! I just completed my first attempt at mitering borders and you were a big help Brye!

Thank you and welcome aboard, Arabella – BTW your name is beautiful.

I hope everyone is trying paper piecing. It is fun and different. I don’t think I would want to do every quilt that way; but I do enjoy the change.

    Darla, it is easier to

Hey Tiffany, it’s okay that you’re using the books sugestions, but still remember that you picked out the fabric exactly and it looks great and works well! I took a lot of color suggestions for my first quilt, and its a good starting point sometimes. I really like the quilt – even if it is Michigan colors. Although my high school colors were blue and gold, so there is still some personal love for those colors.

Arabella, I hope you look at Brye’s (extensive) list for podcasts, there are really some great ones out there. Depending on what you’re looking for, there are a lot of different viewpoints and learning opportunties out there in podcast-land and a lot of different styles. Although there could always be more…

Brye can’t wait to see the united states quilt. I have wondered myself if there was a way to do the states individually on a quilt, but some of them would be hard to applique individual states next to each other.

  • Thanks ladies! Especially Brye for sharing, you are a blessing to this quilter! The pattern is called Split Star, and it’s one of 50 in Nancy’s book. While I enjoyed your compliments on my colors, I have to admit that they are the colors shown in the book for that pattern. I had so much fun piecing it, and thanks to your show about paper piecing, that I went to buy more foundation paper the other day. Sadly, they were sold out. Maybe all the other qulters in my area heard your podcast also, and bought them out ;o)

    Hi Again,

I forgot to say that Tiffany’s quilt looks amazing! So perfectly pieced!

Hi! I’m a new listener, having just clicked on to the concept of podcasts… What a great idea! I am really enjoying your podcasts. They are great to listen to while I am doing little chores. Thanks so much for sharing.

    Arabella

PS I think that $2 is very reasonable, so I will go and donate my share now!

  • Ruthann says:

Yup, the colors in Tiffany’s quilt are the Michigan colors (maize and blue) – GO BLUE (that’s where my son Teddy goes).

By the way, LQS is Local Quilt Store.

Great podcast! I love to listen to you chat about all the stuff going on in your life!
