Hey Melanie,

Very nice. Is that called orange peel pattern by any chance? I have that name stuck in my head. I like the use of opposites on the color wheel. The batiks are really nice and it looks well done. I heard a lady at my quilt store talk about pre-washing in centhropol (spelling?) before using batiks, but haven’t tried it yet.

I really like the shelf and dress, Brye. Hope to see pics of dorothy and friends soon.

Hi Brye,
To answer some things you wondered on the episode about my wall hanging…it measures 34″ square. It is I guess raw edge applique using fusible webbing. I did the decorative stitches before piecing the blocks, and merely did stitch in the ditch in the center section. And the wavy border stitching was easy. The person who suggested it told me to use my melon (football, leaf, whatever) template for the applique pieces, start in the middle of one side, and mark it across leaving 1/4 inch between melons. For the corner I winged it to make it look as good as I could. The batik fabric can be very non colorfast I suppose, esp. the reds and purples. None came off on my hands, but if you use it for something that will be washed often or rubbed, I would definitely wash it several times before using, as it were, since it was just going to hand on my wall, I rinsed the fabric in hot water in my bathroom sink until the water ran clear.

Very nice job on Dorothy dress. I used to make all my girls clothes until peer pressure took over. Made a lot of my own too. And Melanie, for a first time appliquer you did fantastic. Jump in and do some more. I’m scared of it.
And my big news is……husband said I needed a longarm.
Be here in two weeks. Ok I am excited. Got a Viking 18×8. Got that log cabin quilt ready to put on it.

Hi Brye, the quilt Melanie made was amazing for a first quilt, good on her and Dorothy costume fabulous, you are a wonderful sewer, I wouldn’t make clothes as they just are not me, too fidly, but quilts are never too fidly. Loving the podcast, they keep me going whilst I’m working on my long arm and having one every week is just great, wish we could get them everyday, LOL. Keep up the great work. Vanessa (Australia)

The wall hanging is great. Love the fabrics! Haven’t yet ventured into applique, but I hear it calling. And what a wonderful job you did on the costume! How about hanging your curio shelf in your sewing room & stacking fat quarters on it?
