Do You Always Use an Embroidery Hoop?
Posted by Brye Lynn on Sep 3, 2009 in Uncategorized |
This just hit me today.
When I first learned to embroider, I was taught to always use a hoop. It holds the fabric taunt and makes the stitches neater and tighter. I have been adding embroidery accents to my applique blocks. I just realize that I never hoop them. I just hold them in my hand and stitch.
Hey – Quilt Police – Am I doing this wrong?!?!?!
Everything seems to be coming out good. In fact, some of the accents are so close to the edge, I don’t think I could have hooped it.

I don’t know the answer to your question but I just wanted to give you a big thumbs up and encouragement to keep it up with your podcast. I hope you’re doing one tomorrow even though this is a holiday weekend because..
I Can’t Wait for Sew ~ Stitch ~ Create!
PS as I said on Twitter, I am sooooo not a celebrity. Only the people who listen to Craftypod even know I exist and that’s only the ones who listened to that particular episode!!
I sometimes use a hoop and sometimes not, it depends on what I’m doing. If I’m doing french knots or a backstitch then I find it easier to use a hoop. If I’m just doing stem stitch, I find it easier not to. I think whatever feels most comfortable for you if you’re getting the results you like!
I believe there is no need for quilt police. Quilter’s are encouraged to step out of the box and make their own world beautiful and joyful. Otherwise quilting would not be as big an industry as it has become.
Embroidering without a hoop is purely your preference in my eyes. The professional’s may say otherwise, I’ve been embroidering for many years, started out without a hoop and got the same results as I do with a hoop, unless I used pellon or something behind my stitchery, then it went poofy. I personally use a hoop as I find it easier to handle. Keep going as you like to do it Brye.
