Episode 10 ~ Pre-Washing Fabric
Listen to the podcast of this postToday we talked about whether or not you should pre-wash your fabric.
I haven’t posted for the last three weeks because I had a terrible cold that had me in bed for five days. Ever since then, I just hadn’t felt well. Plus, I was overloaded with work that was keeping me very busy.
I did manage to finish two blocks of my frolic applique quilt and one more hardanger coaster. I have two coasters left to go!

Just found your podcast, and enjoyed it alot! I no longer wash my quilting cottons, since the quality has improved so much over the years. But, I DO wash and dry all garment fabric as I plan to care for the garment after construction. In that case, I want to see how the fabric will perform
Hi Brye Lynn
I pre-wash for a couple reasons. First, as you mentioned, I want to make sure I treat the fabric as rough as whoever gets the quilt might. I wash it in hot water and dry it in the dryer – so I know it won’t run or shrink any more. Secondly, I do not like the smell of unwashed fabric. I’m not allergic, just a sensitive nose. Third, I get to “know” my fabric by washing and ironing it. I love that process. I feel it and look closely at all the colours. It’s fun!
Thanks for the podcast. I really enjoy listening

I just wanted to reply so that you know there are people out there who appreciate what you do. I have just discovered your podcast, and you will find that I will always be “behind” on listening. I just listened to the beginning of episode 4, which indicated you really would like people to respond to your polls, so here I am….
I decided to listen because you seem to be interested in many crafty things, not just quilting, which is similar to me. I also do not really quilt, but I did do my first quilt recently as a Christmas present for my son, which turned out fantastically – due in large part to the assistance I had from my sister who is a technical pattern designer. I don’t think I could have finished it without her, because sewing machines are also fairly foreign objects for me… Anyway, keep up the good work…
By the way… perhaps you’ve fixed it by now, but the first episodes did seem to have some audio “fuzz” in the background…
I prewash everything. I wash the fabric just as if I were washing clothes. Everything in my house is washer/dryer friendly and if that fabric doesn’t survive the washer dryer, it wasn’t meant to be.
My daughter also just turned five last week and she got an easy-bake oven. She made cookies and they were gross. Hope your daughters cupcakes turn out better!
The coasters are beautiful! Frolic is such a cute quilt – I may have to make one myself! Prewashing – very rarely; only if I’m using flannel or if I think the fabric might bleed or crock. I hope you are feeling better!!
Love the picture of the hardangar coaster. Those are so pretty and delicate, reminds me of things my Grandma used to have around the house.
Prewash, yes. First stop when it arrives home is the washing machine. Except for kits, then I just have to suck it up and do the project.
Hope you start feeling 100%. Thanks for the podcasts. Hopefully I can walk today during lunch as it is raining in Mid-Missouri today.
I probably should pre-wash but I don’t. If you buy a quilt kit, which I do, they say not to pre-wash. You may have too much shrinkage causing you to not have enough fabric.
I am new to your podcast but am enjoying it. Hope you feel better soon!
